Places to Stay on the Northern Coromandel

  1. Fifteen minutes north of Coromandel Town is Papa Aroha Holiday Park.  This is midway to Colville.  A very popular park tucked away off the main Colville road right beside the Hauraki Gulf.  Quite the fishermen’s paradise with its own boat ramp and mussel farms and island fishing spots all within 15 minutes motoring.  Facilities include nonpowered sites through to self-contained units.

  2. Twenty minutes on and we strike Anglers Lodge nestled at the base of a bushclad valley with seaviews across the Gulf.  Don’t be put off by the name, it’s a great spot for our hikers and bikers with some good rides nearby and a handy Walkway shuttle pickup point. Accommodation ranges from nonpowered sites through to a well-appointed penthouse suite. And if you feel like a fishing expedition, there’s a rather nice vessel located onsite!

  3. Twenty five minutes in and you pass White Star Station, the base for Colville Farm Holidays.  This is a large scale sheep and beef station with some awesome bush walks, glowworm caves, swimming holes and horse trekking.  Its only five minutes from Colville and again has a variety of accommodation from nonpowered camping through to self contained farm cottages and quirky bush lodges.

  4. Mahamudra Centre is a Tibetan Buddhist retreat centre offering programs with teachers from all around the world as well as providing accommodation to visitors throughout the year. Please note the facility is alcohol and drug free. Cabins - rooms – camping Tel: 07 866 6851 E:retreat@mahamudra.org.nz Web: www. mahamudra.org.nz

  5. Thirty minutes north of Coromandel Town and just minutes out of Colville is Colville Bay Motel.  Set back off the road amongst established trees it is a haven for native birds from tui, kereru and kaka.  Colville Bay itself is located a little further along the road and while tidal, is an ideal place to kayak.   This motel is a perfect base for exploring further north from Colville and Beyond and facilities range from nonpowered sites through to self contained units.

  6. A few minutes out of Colville township is Susannah’s Cottage. A recently renovated villa with room to accommodate up to six. The perfect location for Pahi Coastal Walk and Hike & Bike customers looking to wrap a couple of nights accommodation around their chosen activity.

  7. Ten minutes northwest of Colville on the outer edges of Colville Bay is Otautu Bay Camp.  Again a renown spot for fishermen with a tidal ramp at the north end of the beach but also a very safe and sheltered beach to enjoy with the children.  Comes with nonpowered and powered areas along with a backpacker lodge and seaview apartment.  This is effectively the last place to stay with roofed facilities before the DOC only facilities further north at Fantail Bay, Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay.

  8. DOC campgrounds, Fantail Bay, Port Jackson, Fletcher feature at the tip of the Peninsula both on the northwest side and Stony Bay on the northeast coastline plus let’s not forget Waikawau Bay Campground 30 mins east of Colville. There is no roofed accommodation available currently due to ongoing maintenance.  The rest of the offerings are all non powered campsites.  Please also remember these campgrounds are located at the end of gravel roads and many rental companies forbid their vehicles from being driven on the roads north of Colville.

  9. For that more up market BNB style then try Wai Wuri, Colville Bach Just 30 minutes north of Coromandel Town on a tarseal road.  A great spot to chill out for a few days or use as a base for your Northern Coromandel explorations!
